Ensure Santa can Land on your Roof with an Atlanta Home Inspections roof inspection

Chances are, if you have been nice all year, Santa will be paying you a visit the night before Christmas. When he arrives in his reindeer-drawn sleigh, will he be able to safely land on your roof or will he crash and burn?

santa on roof

To keep Santa and his reindeer injury free you may need to consider having a maintenance roof inspection performed. A roof inspection will cost you, but it is  a lot cheaper than what it will cost you if undetected issues wreak havoc.

Worried about weak spots, broken shingles or leaks? Have the roof inspected by a professional who walks the roof. By walking the roof more details can be found as opposed to viewing the roof from the ground with binoculars.

One of the weakest points of any portion of a roof is in the seaming.  If the seams are not properly sealed upon installation, then the risks of the roof having an issue increase. Where adhesion methods, such as glue, tape, asphalt, or heat welder, etc. are used, if both faces of the seam aren’t sealed at once, the seam will be defective.  Seam sealing is present in the following methods:

  • Peel & Stick – As simple as it sounds, and then the seams are rolled out with a special roller.
  • Thermoplastic – This seal fuses when hot air melts the section to the next one or to the flashing
  • Asphalt – the hot substance is mopped into place/ it can also be welded. Once the torch heats the asphalt it will melt to the next membrane or flashing.

Another common area of the roof where issues may be found is around the vent boot.

It is important that the drawband is tightly attached but does not cut into the flashing and that the sealant at the top is installed with no voids or loose sections. The vents are often the first item to deteriorate due to weathering and age. If they are not sealed properly or suffer from the elements, then leaks can occur around them.

Your family’s safety is one of the Atlanta Home Inspector’s top priorities. One way we provide peace of mind is through the service of RecallChek.  This service checks model and serial number information against a database of recalled appliances and alerts clients as well as agent of any new recalls that occur. The service is FREE. It is also provided for a lifetime. Even when you purchase  a new appliance, you can still receive the monthly reports. By providing the new appliance model and serial RecallChek will begin checking it for any recalls, as well.

Here are a few of the reasons Atlanta Home Inspections thinks it is important to offer this recall service FREE to clients:

Faulty heating equipment resulted in 1,520 civilian injuries, and $1.1 billion in direct property damage in the last few years, according to the National Fire Protection Associaton.

Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $900 billion annually.” U.S. Consumer Protection Agency

Recalled products are being recycled (so if concerned about the waste of parts or units, know that the salvageable portions are, and put to good use)

Our nation recorded approximately 6.5 recalls each day, according to studies conducted by Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration.

Be sure to ask if your home inspector provides this or a similar service to help protect your family and your investment.

Tips for protecting yourself and your pet against snakebite

Snake at inspection no date

Atlanta Home Inspections sometimes encounters snakes or evidence of snakes during Atlanta Home Inspection services.

Did you know that snakes can strike from a distance that is half their body length away? This makes it very important to steer clear of areas that could promote the snakes to thrive. While we as humans might realize the dangers of stomping through tall grass, our furry four-legged friends might not – and may even be enticed to investigate.  So here are a few pointers for you that the APCC (Animal Poison Control Center) have put together.

  • Walk your pet on a leash

  • Steer your pet away from bushes.

  • Guide your pet away from yards that have not been mowed

  • Steer Clear of dead snakes. They can still strike reflexively for up to an hour after death!

If you find yourself in an emergency situation where your pet has been bitten by a snake make sure to keep him or her as calm as possible. Remove the collar and keep the bite below heart level. Restrict movement, also. This will prevent the venom from circulating in the bloodstream as quickly. Of course, get to the vet as quickly as possible.

If you are bitten by a snake try to remain calm, also. The steps listed above are also applicable to humans who have been snake bitten.

If you have a snakebite kit make sure it contains a suction pump device to extract the venom. Older kits do not contain these devices. Make sure you have a newer kit on hand. Note: If you can get to a medical facility no longer than 30 minutes after being bitten, you will not need to attempt to extract the venom.  Medical professionals are not great supporters of the suction pump device found in snakebite kits. They maintain Antivenom is the best method. (American Red Cross).

The next time you are out walking or jogging make sure to be aware of your surroundings. The best way to prevent a snakebite is to avoid areas where they live or hide.

Adjustable Rate Mortgage – Is it right for me?

Buying a home is a common rite of passage for most people. Settling down, creating stability, establishing a sense of community and responsibility are a just a few of the benefits of owning versus renting.  Another benefit is the investment, and the equity that a home can provide.  However, when it comes to the financing options – what should you do? When considering mortgage options, which can aid you as the buyer, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Am I interested in a low payment?
  • Do I intend to live in this house for more than 5 years?
  • Is a 30 year commitment unrealistic?

Electing to take an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) over a fixed rate loan is one of the financing options that you will be presented.  ARMs tend to carry lower mortgage rates up- front and, therefore, lower monthly mortgage payments. However, the word adjustable is in the very title, so it stands to reason that the mortgage payment will fluctuate as the rate adjusts over time.  While this might seem a bit scary, since you aren’t sure what the stock market will do tomorrow, it could still be a feasible option if you are not expecting to commit to your current home for more than 5 years. In other words, why pay a higher, set rate, when you know that you are vacating the home in 5 years or less.  However, as the loan adjusts, be prepared for the possibility of a much higher rate down the road.

On the other hand, if you plan on making a lifelong commitment to your property, and are more comfortable knowing what each monthly installment will cost you ahead of time and without variance,  then a conventional fixed rate mortgage is most likely what you will feel more at ease with.  While the initial rate may be slightly higher than the initial rate on an adjustable mortgage, the comfort of knowing is sometimes the best decision in a hectic life where most things are always changing.

As in any financial decision, it is best to consult an authority on mortgage lending. Find a mortgage loan expert who can explain the different options available, any risk factors involved, and the best solutions for you.

Recycling with the Atlanta Home Inspector

Outgrown clothing, stacks of papers, and an over-abundance of plastic shopping bags cluttering your home?  Need some ideas about where to start in the recycling process? The Atlanta home inspector has thought of a few ways to benefit the environment, as well as, a few ways to help people.

All children grow whether we want them to or not, so it is common to have shirts and pants cluttering up the closet space. A good way to recycle the outgrown garments is to donate them. In our community there are various drop-off stations for clothing. Not only are you cleaning-up your space, but also providing clothing for someone else.

Mail, newspapers, magazines and school papers tend to stack-up. A common occurrence in our home, is that the stacks just get shuffled around. Growing tired of this shuffling stack dance, we decided to set up bins for paper products.  Our waste management company picks up our bin once a week. Now books are another story. It is hard to let books go thinking that they might not get read. So a great alternative is your public library. Most of them will take book donations and add them to their collections.

When you open a can of green beans what do you do with the can? Placing veggie and fruit cans with aluminum soda cans is another recycling option. Check with your drop-off or pick-up crew to see if they prefer label peeled or left on the can. It varies by location.

Glass can also be recycled. A separate bin in the garage is helpful to collect any bottles or assorted glassware. Once again, our waste management company picks-up these items during their regular route.

If you have a pet, don’t let him or her leave their deposit behind in your neighbor’s yard. Re-use that plethora of plastic shopping bags to collect their little or big “offerings” as you walk.  You can’t beat the price of them – free!

It might seem like extra work and difficult decision-making, when the subject of recycling is approached. However, recycling benefits our earth – our home.  Also, you are helping other people by donating items that you no longer need or use.

Happy recycling!

Things We All Dislike – That can be easily solved with these household tips!!

You know what I dislike? Purchasing something with a price sticker that wont’ seem to pry off of the surface – that’s what I dislike. I recently read an article with the Atlanta Home Inspector, which explained how to remove that pesky price label . Here is  what it said:

The same pre-treater that erases spots and stains from fabric will also dissolve the black, tacky adhesive and bits of paper that often get left behind when you try to peel off a price sticker. Saturate the sticker with the spray, working it in with your fingers. Wait about 30 seconds, and the gooey residue should be soft enough to scrape off. The last step includes washing the itme in hot sudsy water.

Sounds simple enough!

Want to know something else that I dislike?  BBQ stains. Love to eat BBQ with the Atlanta Home Inspection team, but the stains that it leaves behind can be ridiculous. So when I found this handy tip on msn living, I was excited and eager to share it with y’all :

Place a layer of paper towels over the stain. Working from the inside of the fabric, flush with cold water to transfer some of the barbecue sauce to the towel. Later, pretreat with liquid laundry detergent to break up the stain. Let sit for several minutes, then rinse well. Sponge the stain with white vinegar and rinse again. Pretreat again and wash. Also works for ketchup spills!

While I am venting about simple little irritating things that happen to us all, I suppose I will add one more item to this blog.  This one is regarding leather shoes. You know how they become dull, losing their shine?Well did you know that if you first use a damp cloth to remove visible dirt, then apply a drop of vegetable oil to the surface, those lackluster kicks will be spiffy in no time!  It is so interesting to consider different uses for everyday items. Hopefully these tips will come in handy to you.

How to clean a washer from the home inspector in Atlanta

We have a front loading washer and to us this seems like one of the hardest things to keep clean….  Maintaining a clean washer helps to ensure that the laundry looks its brightest and smells its freshest.Follow a few simple strategies on a regular basis, and your washer will produce the results that you want. Probably the most important step you can take is to read the manual provided by the manufacturer with the washing machine. Use the methods described in the manual for proper maintenance and cleaning of your machine if any are provided for you.Fortunately, most of these cleaning steps are only necessary on an as needed basis. If you prefer, complete most of them once a month for a sparkling clean washing machine. Follow these helpful pointers or the ones in your manual to produce a nice clean washer.

  • Wipe the outside of your washer with a soft cloth and a mild solution of soap. This is especially important if you use the washer lid as a landing station for your laundry.
  • Whenever a load of wash is extremely dirty and leaves a bit of residue on the interior or inner tub of your washer, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe it clean.
  • If your washer is equipped with a lint filter, remove all lint accumulation on a regular basis such as after every wash cycle.
  • Clean the bleach and fabric softener dispensers as soon as they show any sign of dirt or residue. Avoid using laundry detergent to clean the fabric softener dispenser since it may interact with the fabric softener the next time you use it.
  • If desired, apply a coating of appliance wax following the instructions provided with the container. This helps to protect the exterior of your washer.
  • If your washing machine is set up to drain into a laundry tub, you should have a strainer placed in the drain to gather all traces of lint and larger particles of dirt. If the plumbing becomes clogged, your washer may not work properly. A clogged drain can prevent the water from draining properly. Remove any build-up in the strainer after each washing cycle.
  • Clean the washing machine about once a month by running a hot water cycle with bleach. Be sure that you do not use more than the recommended dosage of bleach for your washer. This information may be visible on the bleach dispenser or in the washer’s manual.
  • Clean underneath the lid of the washer using a soft cloth or sponge and clean water or a mild soap solution. While you are at it, clean the top of the washer that sits beneath the lid as well.
  • If you have hard water and mineral deposits have appeared on your machine, refer to your manual for removal instructions. If you do not have the manual, contact the manufacturer by telephone or email. Additionally, you can search online for possible suggestions. Certain types of materials may not react well to specific cleaning methods; therefore, it is essential that you check before you use anything such as vinegar or a cleaning agent that includes vinegar.
